It is difficult to improve on Sue Knight’s description of a metaphor: “A metaphor is a way of understanding, expressing and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another”.
You tend to speak of the world you inhabit in ways that depict your feelings. For instance, you might say: “life is tough” to describe how you see your current circumstances. Or, you might say: “I feel over the moon,” when you feel very excited. Or, you might ask yourself: “why do I never have any luck?” In all of these cases you are expressing your feelings about the state in which you see yourself.
Metaphors are one of the most important NLP techniques used by every NLP Practitioner to enable their clients to feel better as they improve the quality of their lives.
